Junior secondary science teachers will undoubtedly find this new manual on heat a useful teaching tool. The original draft was field tested in Toronto and modified to make the manual appropriate to the "science/society curriculum emphasis." It is an attempt to synthesize various schools of thought with regard to teaching methods and motivational techniques, i.e., daily activities, episodic activities with closure, relevance, and communicating high expectations. There are five episodes in the manual, each of which is broken down into sections on content description, teaching instructions, learning and behavioural objectives. In addition, a detailed teaching approach accompanies each episode. A recommended time frame is suggested as well. Student resource sheets for each experiment are provided and are simple to follow. The equipment required is uncomplicated and inexpensive. The manual meets Ontario curriculum guidelines, according to the authors. In British Columbia, however, only schools using a modified grade 9 science curriculum would be able to use the manual fully, as Heat is a limited subsection of the energy unit.
