Goodwin 's is a proposed national independent magazine to be published by the Goodwin's Foundation, a "national nonprofit organization" incorporated on October 25, 1982. The organization was created "to explore social and economic alternatives partly through the publication of Goodwin's magazine." A forty-page charter issue is promised as soon as the necessary funds have been raised through subscriptions, memberships, donations, and advertising. The preview issue is divided into seven sections. The first two are "Editorial" and "Letters." A section called "Organizing" contains four short articles about efforts by concerned citizens to stop video pornography, to educate North Americans in post-nuclear attack survival techniques, to unionize workers on Parliament Hill, and to change the course of municipal politics in Montreal. The "Goodwin's Investigation" section contains the first paragraph of an article about American weapons' testing in Canada. The "Features" section includes introductory paragraphs for two articles: one on strikes and the other about a policeman who infiltrated the Canadian Ku Klux Klan. The "Reviewing" section features documentary film maker, Laura Sky, and Radio Centreville, a Montreal multi-cultural radio station. Advertisements included in this issue are from OX-FAM and CUSO. Writers include reporters from several Canadian newspapers as well as several Canadian freelance journalists. While it is difficult to predict what subsequent full issues of the magazine will be like, the preview issue does indicate the direction in which the editor, Ron Verzuh, intends to go. The magazine will focus on political, social, and economic problems as well as the ways in which different groups and individuals are attempting to deal with them. Secondary teachers of history, geography, family studies, and environmental science might find this magazine an interesting source of alternative viewpoints for discussion in their classes.
