Drake International through Office Overload and Drake Personnel has been involved with secretaries and their placement for over thirty years. This handbook is a Canadian edition of existing editions in other countries with many Canadian references. The handbook assumes the user is already employed as a secretary and provides a ready reference on many topics such as abbreviations, punctuation, and forms of address.

The paper on interviewing is for the interviewer and offers no hints to the interviewee who may wish a promotion or a new job. One would hope everyone using a telephone would follow the excellent advice offered here on telephone communication. The handbook also includes an extensive list of commonly confused words, spelling, Latin phrases, and signs and symbols.

Grammar and sentence structure rules are not included and could be most helpful. Short charts cover basic world geographical information, world time, temperatures, and Canadian climates. Also included are lists of postal abbreviations, telephone area codes, and distances between cities. One excellent aspect is the glossary of business and word processing terms, but nothing else is written about technology in the office.

The organization of the book follows no set pattern, but an index is included. Many questions can not be answered with this handbook; obvious omissions are material on business letters, filing, office organization, resumes, and applications. If the user is not part of an established office with trained personnel, other sources must be sought. However, the paperback size and price make this a handy desk reference tool in the office, but it is not comprehensive enough for the student or beginner in the office to rely solely on it.
