Canada Illustrated is a collection of seventy-two full page black-and-white engravings from Canadian publications of the late nineteenth century, reflecting the Victorian passion for the romantic and picturesque. Most of the illustrations are from Picturesque Canada (1882), with supplementary materials from Canadian Illustrated News and Picturesque Canada (1869-84). Therefore the subtitle belies the content, as most of the illustrations are from a ten-year period. However, they do represent a visual documentary record of Canada, from coast to coast. A very romantic scene of seamen looking out to sea entitled "Will She Round the Point" (1882) represents Newfoundland, while a picture of a "Canyon on the Homathco" depicts British Columbia. It is unlikely that this book will be popular, but for extensive art collections or for schools where teachers use historic illustrative materials to teach social history, this would be a useful addition. Graphic reproduction, format, and binding are more than adequate. The plates are preceded by several essays that give the history of engraving and place the illustrations in context. There are very brief bibliographical sketches of some of the artists and publishers who are represented, and a short list of primary and secondary sources. For large collections only.
