It is with a feeling of trepidation that this reviewer attempts to do justice to a major talent. Merely to call this work a visual masterpiece cannot possibly express the honesty with which a camera has captured a simple folk in a tired land. These are not photographs for show-and-tell—pictures of happy and industrious people, proud patriots, or smiling complacent citizens. Instead, we are shown the aftermath of despair, resignation in repose, a hope born only out of tragedy. To buy a book such as this and have it sit on a shelf is too great an affront, to its author as well as to its subject; with its purchase must come the responsibility of seeing that it finds a permanent place in the curriculum. Recommended, for senior grades.
