George Swede has written seven poetry books, and this is his fifth book for children. He has created a novel of quick-paced action that would likely attract a grade 4, 5 or 6 student.

The believable setting of Vancouver and Stanley Park enhances the story's up-to-date plot. Andy West is a boy who chances to foul up the plans of a drug-smuggling ring. Getting to the police presents more of a problem than he expected. Andy receives help from two friends and a Mountie in the park. An intricate, although at times too coincidental, set of relationships evolves and brings the story to a surprising yet satisfactory ending.

Short chapters, good print, and wide spacing also make the book appealing. Unstable binding in the paperback may make its use limited, but otherwise Undertow is a good Canadian book for junior grades.
