This book is one in a biographical series about accomplished Canadians from a variety of fields. Teacher-author Mary Coady's careful documentation of World Cup downhill skiing champion Steve Podborski fulfils a much-needed service; that of supplying Canadian children with information at their own level about contemporary Canadians.

An exciting, dramatically written opening, highlighting Podborski's skiing triumph, tapers off to a less fictionalized, chronological account of Podborski's personal and professional life. Readability is ensured by the large type and the text-appropriate, well-captioned photograph(s) on each full-page spread. The somewhat stilted, biographical style of the narrative is off-set by numerous quotes from Podborski himself and those who know him. Although the book is not broken down into chapters or any other natural divisions, it would be most useful as an information resource, especially since there is so little available for children in current Canadian biographies. An index is provided to facilitate access to the information supplied in the text, but a bibliography is not included. The facts concerning Podborski's career are verifiable, but documentation of sources should be the responsibility of the author.

Children of the intended age group are involved in project work and in learning and practicing researching skills, therefore we need books like this in our libraries.
