This Believe It Or Not! series differs from forerunners in its generous use of photographs, many in colour, to supplement the familiar cartoons. Similarly, short pithy articles on a wide variety of related topics fill out the brief traditional captions.

Though it has a table of contents and an index, this is essentially a browsers book and, as such, will prove very popular. Clearly headlined articles highlight the special effects and stunts theme from its roots to 1981. While the photography is not up to Radlauer standard, it is arresting. Distinct, well-spaced type, short sentences and limited vocabulary related to the pictures and photos on every page will appeal even to beginning and reluctant readers.

With all the fantastic creatures and spectacular effects children face at every turn via video and the movies, the insights afforded by this slim volume make it a good choice for any library. It is bound to entrance all but the most adamant bibliophobe.
