Volume 11 Number 4. 1983 July. The Red River settlement is looked at in depth by Wilson. He covers all aspects of the settlers' trek to and colonization of the Red River area: settlement, government and law, earning a living, transportation, communication, church and school, domestic life, and recreation. The information is well-researched and clearly written, as well as being supported and documented with sketches, maps, and photographs. The very important impact the Selkirk settlers had on western Canadian development is made clearly evident throughout the book. Wilson emphasizes the independence of the settlers in establishing and maintaining their colony. A section of bibliographies appears at the end of the book, as does a section of discussion questions for each chapter. This is Wilson's third book in the series. All are equally well done. He has also written Fur Trade in Canada,* and Railways in Canada: The Iron Link.** This book would be an excellent resource when studying about Canada's history and development. *Reviewed vol.
