It is always pleasant to see the arrival of a new short story outlet for Canadian writers, particularly one that states that it is interested in new and un-established writers.

It is difficult under any circumstances to produce a magazine that has a quality of writing in it consistently at the very top level. Therefore, one should not expect it. One should expect interesting and entertaining stories and an editorial policy that is stringent enough to exclude the material that does not meet certain standards. Reader's Choice does do this.

The stories are not as seamless as one might anticipate from writers who were further along in their careers. The machinery of the story shows a bit too much in many cases. However, they are consistently entertaining and interesting because each one of them has an unexpected moment in it.

Many of the stories would be useful in the teaching of high school English, particularly when students are being encouraged to write their own material. The production of the very best writers is so good that students may be intimidated by its excellence. These writers are not, as yet, at that level, and students may approach their work with some feeling that they would be able to produce such things themselves. Recommended for purchase by secondary school English departments and libraries.
