Neil Carey's book, Puffin Cove, is another sample of escapist literature. He and his family moved from southern California to the Queen Charlotte Islands in search of a simplistic lifestyle. However, written in a staccato style, without elaboration of background detail, Puffin Cove leaves the reader uninvolved and with no sense of taking part in the Careys' pioneering attempt. Lists of animals viewed is an inadequate replacement for amusing anecdotes of encounters with the local wildlife that the Careys must have had in their daily life. Conservation-minded British Columbians will recoil at chapter five, where Carey and son go bear-hunting for a "trophy," as they call it. Neil Carey, with a background in photography, might have been wiser to have expanded upon his excellent photographs, assuming that those unacknowledged are his, which occupy too few pages of this book.
