This report is a result of one thousand questionnaires distributed in Canada's ten provinces and two territories through local branches of the Canadian Home & School Parent-Teacher Federation. Its purpose was to take a look at the current guidance services, as perceived by Canadian Home and School members. The overall rate of return of 61.2 per cent is deemed fairly successful.

A number of areas were investigated through the survey but the overall thrust was to find out what the members think of school guidance services. There are several tables of statistics with written commentary to interpret and back up the data.

It is a good overview of guidance services in Canada, but because of its general nature, the report tends to lack substance. Perhaps it will be best used by teacher-parent groups concerned with the image, expectations, and services jf the guidance department. As a guidance counsellor, it was encouraging to read that many people would like to see an increase in the time provided in schools for guidance and counselling.

A number of recommendations result from the survey. Several emphasize the need for more parent involvement through a renewed communication effort. Counsellors should receive adequate training with periodic reviews. School boards need to provide sufficient and uniform funding in their jurisdiction for guidance services.
