After a serious accident at the Calgary Stampede, Johnny Eagleclaw looks back upon his life on the reserve, his relationship with his family, and the events that made him determined to become a rodeo rider. Conflicts over the move away from the reserve school to one in the city, and the issue of discrimination by patronizing and racist whites, are detailed in this brief novel. The boy's story, which should be a central and driving force, is lost because of the western author's dated writing style, stiff dialogue, and lack of real character development.
