Ulli Steltzer, an internationally renowned photographer now living in Vancouver, combines the qualities of a superb technician with the intuition of an artist and the understanding of a humanitarian. She has travelled extensively photographing American migrant workers and Indians in the southwest, coastal peoples in the Pacific northwest, and the highland people of Guatemala. Books to her credit are Indian Artists at Work (1976), Coast of Many Faces with Catherine Kerr (1979), and for children, Building an Igloo (1981), all published by Douglas & Mclntyre. In this oversize book, Steltzer attempts, through her photographs and the words of the Inuit people themselves, to put in perspective the issues and problems created when southern cultural influences and industrial encroachment intrude on traditions of survival thousands of years in the making. Some of the concerns voiced by the Inuit are land claims, education, preservation of their languages and culture, and destruction of the environment. Territory covered by Steltzer in her eighteen months' work ranged from Baffin Island and the High Arctic to the western Arctic and then eastward through the central Arctic, Keewatin, northern Quebec, and Labrador. The more than two hundred duo-tone photographs, evocative of the bleak landscape, are often paradoxical: sealskin boots with a Hawaiian style shirt; Scope, Listermint, rifles, harpoons, and bone knives existing side by side. She concludes Nature in her preface: "For a while there our heartbeats were the same. With this book I return to the Inuit what I was given: an insight into their lives which they so generously shared."
