"The northern gardener lives anywhere in Canada or the upper third of the United States". This lavishly illustrated book explains vegetable gardening in all its diversity and would be useful to beginning gardeners and experts alike.

The writing is rich, and explanations are clear. There are quotations from Catherine Parr Traill, Susanna Moodie, and other Canadian naturalists. Photographs, coloured and black-and-white, and drawings illustrate the text and clarify procedures. Fruits and flowers are not included.

Gardeners will be delighted with this book; students will find it useful for reference; and most people would find it appealing for browsing.
