Don Cherry spent sixteen years playing professional hockey in the minor leagues before finally achieving success as coach of the Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League. A substantial part of this book focuses on Cherry's time in the minors. Although his playing career was relatively lackluster, his reminiscences certainly are not. He seems to have come in contact with every hockey notable of the past twenty-five years and has a funny story about each one. Cherry's coaching career is equally interesting, with chapters on Harry Sinden and the Bruins, the Colorado Rockies, and Team Canada. The abrupt end to his coaching and his apparent black-listing by the NHL are treated with objectivity and humour and show no sign of, pardon the expression, sour grapes. Don Cherry is a most interesting sports figure. With the very able assistance of veteran hockey writer Stan Fishier, Don Cherry's unique personality comes shining through in Grapes.
