Volume 11 Number 4. 1983 July. This novel has few redeeming graces. As a murder mystery, its one moment of human violence has very little excitement or intrigue, even when the body is removed from the scene of the crime. As a ghost story, which attempts to present horror and the Wendigo, it does not succeed in building up any sustained suspense. The term "Wendigo" is never fully explained, and one is left to guess at its implications. It is not as well understood as "exorcism," a term that is related by association with hell and horror. The one scene that does develop nicely involves John and his progress into the cellar. The suspense was accelerated and did reach a dramatic climax as an introduction to the "girl." The Rosedale Horror* by John Ruddy would be a story of comparable length and purpose the development of which is much superior to the Cold Front in sustained drama and characterization.
