The Canada Studies Foundation was incorporated in 1970 as an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of Canadian studies in schools of all levels throughout the country. A number of regional centres were asked to contribute material on various Canadian themes, and the Atlantic Institute of Education dealt with "aspects of the Canadian environment". Canada: Land of Physical Diversity is the first of a series of five books on the Canadian environment theme. Doreen Tomkins has taught Canadian geography for many years, and has authored and co-authored a number of geography texts. Her book begins with a general description of Canada's size and location, and the resulting severe climate. Each of the six major physiographic regions is described in detail, with reference to such things as underlying geology, glacial features, climatic characteristics and the factors responsible for them, natural vegetation, soil development, and a brief reference to major economic activities. Maps, sketches, photographs, and climatic data are used liberally, although, unfortunately, there is no colour. A summary section stresses that the physical structure of Canada has great impact on Canadian society. The region in which one lives influences such things as educational opportunities and job prospects, as well as lifestyles and value systems. The actual text is followed by a glossary of geographic terms, a list of suggested readings and audiovisual material, and exercises for both classroom and field trip use. This book is a good resource for teachers of Canadian physical geography at all high school levels. Although there are a few typographical errors, and some pages of the introduction are out of order, the format is concise, and the content is both readable and useful. Susan E. Fowler, Centennial S.
