This informative book explains how to market work-related strengths to employers in order to secure meaningful employment. There is no attempt to look at how appropriate the career planning has been to get to this point. Instead, this book concentrates on revealing what employers are looking for from the job applicant (skills, abilities, knowledge, experience) and on knowing how to purposefully communicate your background to employers. The majority of the book contains suggestions for a well-written resume. In fact there are samples offered for thirty-seven different occupations varying from carpenter to physiotherapist, bartender to teacher. Special cases such as students or military personnel are given separate consideration. Thirty-two steps are suggested for completing a "professional" product. One chapter is devoted to the covering letter. Preparation for the interview, the types of questions to expect during the interview, and what the employer considers when deciding on whom to employ, are explored. One chapter deals with what factors are considered during the probationary period to decide whether the employer will let you keep the job. Another chapter deals with community resources to help the job hunter (e.g. private employment agencies, the Canada Employment Centre, and newspaper advertisements). This practical approach is a good guide for compiling a résumé. Its brevity in the other areas results in it being more of an introduction to other information to be explored elsewhere if so desired.
