A group of Canada's most influential writers and editors decided it was time to put down on paper some guidelines for that most delicate of relationships, the one between author and editor, on which all good publishing hangs. In consultation with colleagues, Rick Archbold, former managing editor of Doubleday Canada, Doug Gibson, publisher at Macmillan, Dennis Lee, poet, editor, and one of the founders of Anansi Press, John Pearce, editorial director at Clarke, Irwin, and Jan Walter, director of publishing at McClelland and Stewart, provide a short overview of the publishing process from first contact, whether by submission or solicitation of manuscript, to finished product. Their objective is to dispel myths, especially the Hollywood movie generated ones that depict gladiatorial clashes between author and editor. Editors are either bullies who treat art with contempt in an attempt to produce a "commercial" product or are geniuses who are able to transform the worst drek into a masterpiece. The reality lies somewhere between the two extremes, and Author & Editor explores the middle ground, defining responsibilities, delineating potential problems, and offering workable solutions.

A useful guide for both prospective authors and editors, this should be on the shelves of all public libraries and school libraries where there is a strong creative writing program.
