Reviewed by Joan Weller. Volume 11 Number 4. 1983 July. This collection offers twelve Afro-Brazilian folk tales that have survived in the new world. The author's postscript reveals her specific knowledge of Brazilian tales as seen in her inclusion of five fables with the Monkey as the predominant figure. "The Monkey and the Wax Doll" as told in Brazil, is better known in its American variant form, "Brer Rabbit and the Tar Baby". "Anansi and the God" is a creation story whose mischievous hero is familiar to many storytellers through the Jamaican tales contained in such collections as Philip Sherlock's Anansi the Spider Man. The stories are of interest to the folklorist. Unfortunately for the storyteller, the language is often too difficult for young listeners and the style awkward. The author admits to "adding artistic elaborations", whatever they are. Lacking a language and style to conjure up the story images, the tales remain locked on the page rather than freed for the imagination.
