Robert Munsch is gaining cult hero status among the junior set for his wonderful stories, and now his picture books are available in a new mini size (3x3 inches) called "Annikins"— perfect for small hands—at a mere 99 cents each. At that, price, any library can afford to pick up these three new titles, all of which are colourfully illustrated by Michael Martchenko.

The Fire Station details the adventures of Michael and Sheila when they climb aboard a fire truck. Once again, Munsch's female character is not traditionally stereotyped. In fact, it is Sheila who encourages Michael to explore. The story is open-ended with the two friends heading for a police station. As such, it could lead to a fun writing assignment for the students.

Angela's Airplane is the hilarious account of a five-year-old's accidental solo flight. The ending has a nice twist: Angela doesn't keep her promise about never flying another airplane because when she grows up she becomes a pilot. Mortimer is the delightful story about trying to put a little boy to bed. The Munsch sense of the absurd is heightened by Mortimer's repeated, "Bang-bang, rattle-ding bang." Young readers will be chanting the refrain before the story is finished. In each story, Martchenko's drawings with their fine sense of detail enrich the narrative.

Buy a few of these books for your young patrons and recommend them as additions to a classroom book collection. Also, the record, Munsch: Favourite Stories, is available through Kids' Records in Toronto.
