This is a very important document! Ever since 1968, when the Science Council of Canada predicted that "the computer industry will play a major role in shaping the society of tomorrow," it has encouraged the development of a national policy and a plan to support the development of industry in this direction. Very knowledgeable experts sit on this committee. They are warning us that although Canada is participating in the world-wide technological revolution, governments, education, industry, and labour are not responding quickly enough. We are falling far behind other countries that have supported their projects with millions of dollars in public and private sector investment.

In 1981, the department of industry, trade and commerce announced that the Canadian trade deficit in electronics had grown to $2 billion for the fiscal year 1979-80 and private projections indicated this deficit would grow to over $5 billion by 1985. And we are worried about Canada's automotive industry?

This is report number 33 in an excellent series related to science and technology. It compares how Canada is responding to the new technology with other countries' efforts. It outlines implications for industries and institutions and for individuals. It stresses the need for policy and lists twenty-seven recommendations.

The information society needs large numbers of highly trained individuals. Education will play a major role; therefore, every teacher and librarian should read this report. There is an index and bibliography included.
