Elizabeth and her classmates were visiting Upper Canada Village on a class trip when Elizabeth decided to visit one more building, Cook's Tavern. She stepped through the door and one hundred years back in time, into the role of a different Elizabeth. How Elizabeth lived through the last few days to the eve of the war between the Americans and the Canadians will bring history vividly to life for young readers. They will see how different life was in pioneer days and how real the war was as seen through the eyes of one family. Kathleen Bradford put in just enough detail to make life in the pioneer days real. For example, she mentioned that Elizabeth had "to shake up her tick and make up her bed," and how scratchy her homespun skirt felt against her legs. There is a glossary at the end of the book to explain some of the words that might be unfamiliar to the young reader. I find this book to be interesting, exciting, and enlightening.
