This is the memoir of a Canadian "cowboy" during the first four decades of the twentieth century. In a very colloquial style, he recollects his life as a youth in rural Alberta, later as a ranch hand, and finally as a homesteader in British Columbia. This portrait of the harshness of life on the range and the harrowing escapades and adventures as seen through the author's eyes may make good reading if one has an interest. However, for school use and in particular for school library collections, this book has very limited potential. For the young age group that would have the greatest interest, the reading level is too difficult. Older students and teachers would not be enthusiastic either about the amount of detail in this personal history. Despite some black-and-white photographs and an interesting glossary of terms, this would not add substantially to any school collection. Not recommended.
