Now in handsome, glossy paperback format, these collected Discovering Toronto columns retain the freshness and immediacy that made them a popular feature of The Toronto Star between 1979 and 1981. Author Whiteson combines the specialized perceptions of an architect with a journalist's ease of expression. His thoughtful assessment of the "liveability" factors that make Toronto one of the safest, pleasantest, and most attractive of great cities, enhanced by incisive black-and-white photography, details some of the city's allurements and a few of the blemishes city boosters usually forget to mention. This work will obviously be of particular interest to Torontonians or people living within visiting range, for it suggests various places of interest to visit, walks and hikes, and photographic vantage points. Senior students in sociology, architecture, and man in society courses will find The Liveable City to be both informative and readable, a rare and pleasing combination.
