Reviewed by donalee Moulton-Barrett Volume 11 Number 3. 1983 May. Carol Lee Bacchi wants us to know that Canada's early feminists, the suffragists, were not radical women. They belonged to the economic elite of this country and were well educated. Most joined the reform movement not to advance change but to slow it down. They were fighting, long and hard, for their traditional Christian values. If you have taken even one beginning sociology of women class or have read any Canadian feminist history, you probably already know this. Bacchi and her publisher seem to think she has discovered some earth-shattering historical facts, but frankly I cannot find them. All I found was a boring book that gave me less a history of our early suffragists than a recitation of facts. Liberation Deferred? reads like a master's thesis and has all the excitement of an oral defence with nobody in the room. donalee Moulton-Barrett, Halifax, NS.
