The Canada Studies Foundation was founded in 1970 to promote understanding between the diverse peoples of Canada. The Dynamic Community is one example of the sorts of curriculum materials that the organization creates to support its many projects. This primary social studies guide is especially interesting because it is also an example of a classroom manual based on a theoretical rationale. In this case the guidelines were provided by Hodgetts and Gallagher in their book, Teaching Canada for the '80s.*

The authors have developed four units that demonstrate the belief that teachers of children in grades K-3 should be far more concerned with the development of healthy attitudes than with the accumulation of information. The topics-sharing, interaction, community affairs and controversy—are meant to start youngsters thinking about why people have come to live in communities and the ways in which these communities handle problems.

Each unit consists of clearly stated objectives, an enumeration of concepts and several suggestions for discussion and/or activities. A dozen black line masters provide convenient cartoons, sketches, dialogues, and questions. There is also a bibliography that suggests more than forty useful children's books but, surprisingly, offers no professional references. That is left to Hodgetts and Gallagher.

This teacher's resource guide is a simple, inexpensive tool that offers ideas and activities that could be adapted to most Canadian social studies programs. It should be on the desk of every primary teacher in the land.
