The setting of this junior science-fiction story is the year 3000 in a city which has been built under Mount Royal. The protagonists are two sets of brothers, who have grown-up in this artificial world and know the surface world only as a source of danger since the nuclear disaster. When Luke's unique telepathic ability draws him to the surface world to try and help his new-found friend, he breaks his leg and has to be rescued by his brother, Paul, who is a scholar, not an explorer. Eric, too, must rescue his brother, Bernard, who has been trapped when he encountered another group of inhabitants underground while trying to fix his city's power supply. Raised to believe in the importance of peace to a world almost destroyed by a nuclear war, each boy must deal with the unknown and make decisions that affect all the rest of the inhabitants of the underground city. This is a story of bravery, loyalty, and understanding that will appeal to young readers who like science fiction adventure stories. It is well written, moves along at a good pace, and has a satisfactory conclusion. Unfortunately, it will not make it on to anyone's list of non-sexist material.
