Beautiful Dreamer is a fast-paced, engaging story set in Vancouver's Kitsilano area. We follow its twelve-year-old motherless heroine, Katie, through a summer of growing up through trial and error. In order to contribute to her family's limited resources, Katie tries to raise money through such schemes as a odd-jobs company ("Beautiful Dreamers"), lottery tickets, and even shoplifting. Her well-intended quest leads to conflicts with cranky neighbours, her sister, and her cab-driving father, her best friend, and inevitably, with her own conscience. But just when life seems to have bottomed out, an almost incredible, turn of events lets Katie emerge on top.

Though the plot is at times overcomplicated and contrived, the adolescent reader for whom this book was written may feel this promotes empathy for Katie in her confused, pressured situations. The main characters are realistic and prepossessing, and the story is sufficiently captivating to make this a popular choice.
