"After the War" refers to the period from about 1946 into the 1950s and concerns post-war immigration to Canada. A rough estimate would assess about one half the book as photographs, and excellent photos they are. The text for the most part consists of letters "from an English, German, Czech, Jamaican, etc., immigrant," letters to the editor, extracts from government publications, and explanatory captions to some pictures. The author's research is truly extensive, and she lets her choice of excerpts speak for themselves, reserving comments to an introduction and a page or two at the beginnings of the nine chapters. Chapter X is a conclusion. Jean Bruce comes to no firm conclusions, but the overall tone comes out as somewhat critical of Canada's immigration policy. This book has no pretensions to be an in-depth study, but may encourage readers to learn more through the "Recommended Reading." The author is herself an immigrant. She has been involved in numerous CBC programs as story editor, writer, interviewer, and producer. She is presently employed as a policy development officer with the National Museums of Canada.
