Edith Fowke, well-known Canadian folklorist, has provided the young reader with a varied collection of riddles ranging from nonsensical to logical. Whereas this is quite a switch in subject matter for the author, she has compiled a comprehensive arrangement of riddles, crosswords, puns and puzzles of logic to both amuse and challenge the reader.

Riot of Riddles is not merely a joke book to be skimmed over quickly. Rather, as the definition of the word riddle suggests, it is a collection of puzzling questions that relies on one's ingenuity to solve.

The reading and comprehension levels of this book cover a wide age range, so that, whereas a grade 4 student can enjoy the simpler puns and puzzles, the grade 7 student can find equal enjoyment and challenge. Similarly, the wide variety of riddles offers a novel source of material for a classroom teacher to cover topics such as categorizing, rhyming, homonyms, proverbs and comparisons.

The format of this book is simple and attractive, especially with the delightful, simple cartoons by Lesley Fairfield. An answer key is provided at the end of the book for the crosswords and puzzling problems.

People of all ages love the fun and challenge of riddles. Riot of Riddles is an entertaining book that is meant to be shared with young and old alike. It is unfortunate that it is printed on a poorer grade of paper because it is definitely not a book to be read only once.
