There has been renewed interest in the writings and career of Chief Dan George following his death in September 1981; first a biography Call me Chief* and now this compilation illustrated with drawings by his friend with whom he had collaborated in My Heart Soars. Hirnschall, a Vancouver artist and illustrator, has a keen interest in conservation of the wilderness environment and has written two books on this theme. My Spirit Soars is a collection of short writings in a poetic mode that cry out for love for children and reverence for the elderly and the world of nature. Others are reflections on death and the spirit world. One longer poem, To a Native Teenager, is an anguished expression of the futility of flight to the city. Sensitively drawn charcoal illustrations depicting children, the elderly, animals, and landscape appear on nearly every page. A now well-known portrait of Chief Dan George graces the dust-jacket. The book will be of primary interest for those with a concern for native culture but it will also be useful in the language-across-the-curriculum concept for sociology-related subjects. *Reviewed vol.
