The Moons of Jupiter is a collection of twelve stories, ten of which have been published previously in Chatelaine, Saturday Night, Toronto Life, The New Yorker, Tamarack Review, and The Atlantic Monthly. Like many of Alice Munro's stories, they provide glimpses of "real" people at points in their lives that are notable or memorable for some reason: a visit by relatives, an excursion to the family farm, a short stay in a guest house, Christmas season in a turkey processing factory, a love affair interrupted by a tragic accident, a visit to a dying father. The settings vary from Ontario, Vancouver, and New Brunswick, to Australia. Some stories are first-person narratives; others are told in the third person. The stories are enjoyable for their variety and for the sense of the familiar which they evoke. They also give readers a heightened awareness of the ordinary and leave them with a sense of the mystery and at times the unpredictability of everyday life.
