Robertson Davies, playwright and novelist of prominence, has entered the field of the story of the supernatural. High Spirits is the original original, one of a kind; a collection of ghost stories that amuse. There is not a frightening line or one scary passage. When he was Master of Massey College, Davies created these stories for Massey College Gaudy Nights, a purpose which makes them especially relevant and enjoyable for inmates of Massey College, but not necessarily only for that college's graduates and faculty. There are eighteen tales and each has arisen from the affairs of the time. Refuge of Insulted Saints, for example, was told the year that the Vatican de-sanctified a gaggle of ancient and medieval personalities including Saints George and Patrick.

Each story is about ten pages long with Davies himself as the unifying character. The volume is paperbound, and the print is clear. For sophisticated senior students and adults.
