Jackie Spaulding, trainer, teacher, and small farmer, has other "horsey" books to her credit. This useful manual briefly covers all aspects of horse ownership. It is generously illustrated with clear line drawings and a few black-and-white photos and is comparable to many titles available, with the difference that there is a section on driving and on harness. In addition, it has a western (geographic not style) orientation, which is also not that common in books of this type.

Of particular value for the beginner in equine matters, it will also be read with profit by experienced horse people. The advice given is sound and practical. Where the author offers suggestions that deviate from the norm (e.g., re barbed wire fences) she gives good reasons for her opinions. Of value to readers of all ages, from coast to coast and north and south of the border. Includes an index, glossary, and space for record keeping.
