Like the other fourteen books in this series, the emphasis is on assisting the reader to see the relationship between the school subject, in this case English, and the various occupations to which it has applicability. The booklet is quick to point out the many different forms of the subject "English." Barrett attempts to get the readers to analyse their own skills and preferences as they consider their interests in novels, poetry, non-fiction, plays, short stories, etc. Because English is important in a great many occupations, the author has elected to categorize thirty-three selected occupations on the basis of English proficiency required. "Essential" includes advertising copywriter, editor, reporter, English teacher, etc. "Highly Desirable" includes lawyer, actor/actress, director (stage, motion picture, television), clergyman, librarian, secretary, stenographer, teacher, etc. "Useful" includes occupations requiring university education and occupations in business and industry. The author has helped to focus attention on a few careers. In doing so there are many omissions, but to be more comprehensive would reduce the value of this booklet. The final chapter suggests other information the reader should investigate. This booklet is an extremely helpful resource that should be in every career centre.
