Volume 11 Number 2.
This intermediate-level health text provides information on physical fitness and on growth from adolescence to adulthood. As the title implies, the emphasis is on teaching the student to be responsible for his or her health choices during these crucial years of change. The text is clearly written and includes an excellent glossary of new words. Key ideas are emphasized in photographs and cartoons or are rewritten in coloured blocks beside the main text. Review pages at the end of each chapter outline the main ideas of the text, then ask questions on content and suggest practical related activities. Students will find the book is interesting and attractive to read. The teacher's resource guide provides objectives for each chapter and discusses concerns that the teacher should be aware of in presenting the material. A true-false test is provided as well as overhead originals and suggestions for a wide variety of classroom activities. The teaching techniques suggested are numerous, including the use of a question box, unfinished statements, projects, brainstorming, etc. Field trips and guest speakers are recommended where appropriate. Teachers will find useful, creative ideas throughout the guide. The text and teacher's guide are highly recommended at the grade 9 level. The text itself could be purchased as resource material for the library.
