D'Arcy: A Docu-Drama is basically a one-man play that traces the life of Thomas D'Arcy McGee from his rebellious youth in Ireland, to the days as a member of Parliament for Montreal, to his assassination in Ottawa. The playwright, Sandra Dempsey, (who has written ten other pieces ranging from comedy to drama) presents a well-researched adaptation of D'Arcy's life. She attempts to capture the flavour of his speech and his vibrant way of speaking. Her play gives an interesting insight into the man and his beliefs. There are a number of particularly good sections that show his speaking abilities that deserve particular attention: D'Arcy in Parliament speaking on the need for Confederation, to crowds in Ireland on the prospects of emigration, and his views on the Irish brotherhood known as the Fenians. The photographs included in the text lack captions to indicate what the reader is looking at. They are also of such poor quality; they do little to enhance the reader's view of the play. As a method to learn stage discipline and dialogue, the play does present interesting possibilities for the drama teacher of grades 7 to 10. There are a number of long passages for aspiring actors to learn, and a few pages of stage and lighting directions are included to enable stage crews to experiment with play production.
