Written in response to a 1981 report entitled Western Security, which was produced by the directors of four leading institutes of international affairs, this slim booklet attempts to provide the Canadian perspective overlooked in the earlier document. The five authors, themselves connected to Canadian institutions dealing with international affairs, briefly examine the past, present and future roles of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and Canada's participation in it. Though increasing world tensions seemingly demand a strong NATO, the cohesion of the Atlantic Alliance in the face of challenges from within and without is questioned by the authors. The book contains seven recommendations to strengthen NATO. Four are directed to the entire alliance; three are presented for Canada's active consideration. Not believing that Canadian government has given NATO its appropriate priority, the authors call for the federal government (1) to produce a green paper on security policies (2) to present Canada's views on security matters more publicly and aggressively within the alliance and (3) to substantially increase and revise Canada's present military contribution to NATO.

Virtually devoid of statistics, this booklet of opinion makes interesting reading, though it is recommended for the vertical file, not the stacks and then only for collections needing such specialized content.
