Jay Teitel, an admittedly incurable Argophile, looks back over the last thirty years of the frustrating fortunes and misfortunes of Toronto's professional football team. Beginning with the "classical period" from 1945 to 1952 when the Argonauts were the most respected team in the league, Teitel analyses in great detail their sudden fall from prominence, and investigates several theories that attempt to explain their continuing lack of success. The overriding theme is the "Argo Bounce," which worked in the team's favour during the glory days when fumbled balls always seemed to end up in the hands of a Toronto player and, perversely, in the hands of the opposition during the last three decades. With well-chosen verbal images Teitel brings to life the Great White Hopes, the Great Black Hopes, and the inspirational Saviours (coaches) whom the media have ballyhooed at the beginning of each season to be destined to "save" the team. He carries his account forward to the spring of 1982 and predicts, quite accurately, the successful season the Argos have just completed. While this book will be of undoubted interest to the long-suffering Toronto football fan, one can not help but wonder whether the general reader will soon tire of the long litany of despair and the parade of personalities that move rapidly on and off stage as if caught in a revolving door.
