Dr. Greenglass, an associate professor at York University, has lectured and written about several social issues affecting women and men today.

"The goal of the present book is to evaluate critically the social and psychological functioning of women and men, from a feminist perspective." Her information is based on American and Canadian experience and hundreds of studies. A review of the research shows that women are exploited and at a disadvantage in business or dealing with men. Part of this study examines the socialization of boys and girls and how stereotypes are maintained in the family, the media, and school. The lack of high achievement motivation in women is also discussed along with cognitive ability.

A woman's self worth relates to success in interpersonal relationships. This study of psychopathology examines the mental state of women and men and why each sex reacts as they do. Greenglass shows that gender roles affect both sexes but masculine characteristics are still valued more highly than feminine ones. Changes are needed in gender roles and hope rests in rearing children to develop independent strivings, interdependence, and harmonious relationships.

Although this book has a feminist point of view, its conclusions from the many studies are not one sided. The sixty-eight pages of references demonstrate this is a review of proven research, although some studies are old and may not be valid today. A comprehensive author list and index complete the text. Although this work is scholarly, it is easily read and understood by the lay person. Many of the topics covered are part of the senior high school curriculum, but everyone could benefit from reading this book.
