This is a book of photographs documenting the work of the Geological Survey in northern and western Canada There are more than 200 excellent photo graphs showing rugged life and the struggle with the environment in Labrador, Ungava, Hudson Bay, James Bay, the West Mackenzie Valley, British Columbia, the Yukon, and the Arctic. The book contains some photos from the previously published Early Canada, compiled by I Hall and issued in 1967. As well as these compiler Blackadar has uncovered additional heritage pictures, some relatively recent, and he has arranged them by region to achieve coherence.

About half the photos are black and white, while the rest are golden sepia or ice-blue. They have nice contrast and tone, show sharp detail, and are accompanied by captions or short paragraphs. Prints of all the photographs in the book can be purchased from the Geological Survey, and the last page contains a list of catalogue numbers to facilitate ordering. The book lacks an index and photographer credits.

On the Frontier is a worthwhile book for schools and libraries as it has general appeal and offers a wide range of visual history not available elsewhere. Parallel columns in English and French could make it useful to language students as well.
