Robert Munsch who brought us The Dark,* Mud Puddle, ** and others in his Munsch For Kids Series has a winner in his latest book for very young children. Five-year-old Robin finds a baby in a hole in her sandbox and tries to find someone to take care of it. After approaching many memorable characters, humorously captured in Michael Martchenko's brightly coloured illustrations, she filially finds a surprised and surprising surrogate parent for the baby whose only utterances are, "Murmel, Murmel, Murmel." The author/ storyteller knows how children talk and what they enjoy hearing. There is just enough repetition for anticipating young listeners at storytime who know it's "yecch" when a baby does "pee its pants," "dirty its dialer" and yet needs "loving, hugging and feeding." An added bonus is the book's surprise ending—wish fulfilment at its best. Adults and children will gleefully share aloud this dreamlike story blending realism and fantasy in laughter.
