Howard Engel is a CBC executive producer and an ex-high school teacher. He has written three mysteries set in Canada and his detective, Benny Cooperman, has won a wide following across the country. The Suicide Murders* and The Ransom Game** have been compared to Ross Macdonald's novels for their complexity and intricate characterization.

In Murder on Location, Benny is searching for a missing person in Niagara Falls, where he finds himself involved with the Movie People. A large part of Hollywood, it seems, has invaded the Falls to make The Ice Bridge, an epic disaster thriller by local boy, Neil Furlong, directed by the legendary James Sayre.

Benny is fascinated by the gossip and in-fighting of the stars of the screen, but it bears little relation to the missing woman. He decides that it is more likely that her disappearance is related to her husband's shady real-estate dealings-and that leads him into the middle of gang warfare between the local mafia and the syndicate.

To confuse the issue, an unknown young actor is found murdered in one of the Falls' most exclusive hotels. Several exciting chases follow, leading to a dramatic climax against the spectacularly beautiful winter backdrop of Niagara Falls.

Murder on Location is a fast, funny, clever, integrated mystery novel, and it is all-Canadian. It should appeal to a wide audience.
