In Your Own Words is an attractive and comprehensive language arts textbook focusing on language development and communication skills. Relevant and thought-provoking selections are the vehicles that encourage the students to formulate coherent opinions about a variety of literary themes. The questions and suggested activities that follow encourage articulate group interaction and personal expression.

The authors have used a thematic approach to structure the text and an accompanying teacher's resource book suggests alternative combinations of the material for yet other theme packages. The short selections will not only hold students' attention and interest but will allow for enough class time to actually use many of the creative activity suggestions in the teacher's manual.

The text is liberally sprinkled with black-and-white photography and art, which seem to underscore the poignancy of the human condition expressed in many of the selections. Especially memorable are Edgar Bracco's "Hitchhiker From A Far Country," a poem by Miriam Wad-dington, "Someone Who Used to Have Someone," and Gwendolyn MacEwen's short story "Snow."

Joan M. Green and lan W. Mills have done an outstanding job with the Teacher Resource Book. Each unit contains quotations and suggested activities useful for sparking discussions and setting a mood. Selections are closely analysed and there are "Word Watch" sections to alert teachers to possible vocabulary with which students may not be familiar.

In summary, the textbook is a successful blend of good literature and an emphasis on language skills, one that should hold an appeal for both teachers and students.
