In 1968, the Centennial Commission received permission to use a series of drawings together with brief biographies of the Fathers of Confederation. These had been published by the Toronto Star in 1964 and then later sold as a portfolio. As a Centennial project, these were again put into an attractive portfolio by the Ontario department of education and distributed to all Ontario schools, libraries, and government offices.

The Centennial Commission used these as a base and asked Coucill to do similar pictures of our governors general and prime ministers. These were published, with prefaces and biographies by Clyde R. Blackburn and Jean-Charles Bonenfant, in an attractive oversize book with a gold cover and distributed by the Queen's Printer.

In 1978, the first hard-cover edition was published by John Wiley using the previous material but up-dated by adding L6ger and Trudeau. The 1982 edition (labelled "second edition") is almost identical to the 1978 edition but with the addition of Governor-General Edward Schreyer and former Prime Minister Joseph Clark (1979-1980). The material on Pierre Elliott Trudeau has been rewritten to include information on the repatriation of the Constitution, the History biography of John Diefenbaker has had a paragraph added to record his death, and the introduction has been expanded by two paragraphs that record the steps in repatriation of the Constitution.

For a school or public library that do'es not have a copy of these earlier editions, this book is a must. The portraits are attractive and very effective in black and white, done by Irma Coucill, a Toronto artist famous for her "Hall of Fame" drawings. The biographies are concise and provide information not easily available to students elsewhere. If earlier editions are part of the collection, the necessity for this up-dating would need to be carefully weighed.
