Graves and McClymont have produced an interesting anthology for elementary schools that will give the students a much better appreciation of Canada, the land, and the people. The stories cover most of the provinces of Canada as well as touching on famous people in the sports, arts, and literary fields. It does not restrict itself only to Canadian authors but includes stories from around the world to broaden the base, and to provide contrast and comparisons with the Canadian content.

It is well structured with a good change of pace from traditional poems and stories to blue-outlined short sports articles on various famous athletes like Gilles Villeneuve. One chapter is titled "Music" and includes the scores from various well-known rock songs, a section I am sure the students will enjoy. In addition, each chapter begins with a short explanation of what the stories in that section are concerned with and ends with a short bibliography of others on the same or similar themes. The illustrations and colour photographs used add a great deal to the book. In particular, the photographs of marine life off the B.C. coast are very well done.

The only major flaw of the anthology is the inclusion of a number of set pieces that seem to have been included not so much for their literary value as because they have been traditionally found in books of this sort. Thus we have articles like "Casey at the Bat" yet again. They are not so numerous as to intrude on the enjoyment of the rest of the book but are not needed. A good book to purchase as an alternative text.
