Do our bookstores, libraries, and personal coffee tables need another standard book of pictures about Canada? The answer, briefly, is, "no, we don't." Fortunately, when we get Canada: A Landscape Portrait, we don't get just another "standard picture book." We get a statement, an undeniably significant statement on Canada.

The editor, J.A. Kraulis, who in himself is a noted Canadian photographer, has compiled in 10 ¼ x 8 ½ inch format an excellent book. It has eighty-four colour and sixteen black-and-white photographs; each on its own page. There is an introduction by Robert Fulford, a foreword by the editor, a list of the forty-two photographers, a brief description of their life and philosophy and, lastly, the pictures themselves accompanied by the photographer's name with title or description of the picture.

All the photographs are exceptional. There will be differences in personal preferences but no arguments over quality. They show the subtleties and the not so subtle aspects of Canadian geography.

With most picture books of this type, the foreword and the introduction are inconsequential, but in this case, they are in many ways as important as the photos. That is where this book differs from others; in a country such as Canada where the people are so profoundly affected by geography, it is a true overview.

Speaking as a Canadian, I would say that if this book lives up to its title Canada: A Landscape Portrait, it becomes a portrait of us all. It does.
