A Montessori science teacher has written a clear and simple explanation of the birth of our universe and the origin and creation of the earth and its atmosphere, land forms, and oceans. Branley's The Beginning of the Earth (Crowell, 1972) offers more information for the same age level, but this title in the Let's Read and Find Out series does not cover the "Big Bang" theory. The illustrations by Guilio Maestro in the Branley book are not as attractive as the full-page water-colour illustrations by Nancie Warner for The Big Bang. These paintings are dramatic and bold and should appeal to students at the primary level. A glossary of terms and an awkwardly drawn map of the solar system are also included. This is a useful book for libraries requiring science material that is easily accessible.
